Weekly Photo Challenge: Monument

Ale stenar i snö (kopia) (kopia)

On a cliff, by the seaside in the south of Sweden, there is a megalithic monument from the Nordic Iron Age. It’s called Ales Stenar, or Ale’s Stones in English. A local legend has it that King Ale lies buried underneath. But nobody knows for sure and there are different theories to why it was constructed. It could be a grave monument or it could by a sun calendar like some people tend to believe. IMG_1254 (kopia) (kopia)

Whatever it was from the beginning, or when and why it was constructed, are questions that I like to ponder whenever I visit this monument. It is a tourist attraction and in the Summer it is very busy. At other times it can be quiet and serene.

The monument is formed as a stone ship and in between the 59 boulders you often see cows.

I visit this monument whenever I am in the south of Sweden, any time of the year. I like when the stones are covered with snow or when the early morning mist makes the place magical. Sunsets are fantastic too of course. The photos above are from Winter, Spring and Autumn. So I just have to include a last one from Summer, with the sun setting in the Baltic.
